Pamplona, Spain – Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman continued his fine form in the Spanish top flight, converting a crucial penalty to help Atletico Madrid secure a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Osasuna at El Sadar on Tuesday night.
The win strengthens Atletico’s grip on fourth place, while elsewhere in La Liga, Real Betis made history by securing a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League for the first time in over two decades.
Lookman Leads Atleti Charge
Atletico Madrid, looking to consolidate their position in the top four, wasted little time asserting dominance. The breakthrough came in the 15th minute after Javi Galan was penalized for a handball inside the box. Lookman, who has become a pivotal figure for Diego Simeone since his February move from Atalanta, stepped up and clinically dispatched the penalty past Aitor Fernandez.
The Madrid side doubled their advantage in the 71st minute when Norwegian striker Alexander Sorloth connected with a precise cross to head home from close range. Despite a dominant display, Atletico faced a nervous finish after Marcos Llorente was sent off for a second yellow card in the 79th minute. Osasuna’s Kike Barja pulled one back in stoppage time, but the visitors held firm to claim all three points.
The result moves Atletico to 66 points, trailing third-placed Villarreal by three points, though the Yellow Submarine holds a game in hand.
Real Betis Return to Europe’s Elite
In Seville, the atmosphere was electric as Real Betis defeated 10-man Elche 2-1 to guarantee a top-five finish and a ticket to the Champions League. Goals from Cucho Hernández and Pablo Fornals were enough to see off the visitors, who had Leo Petrot sent off early in the second half.
This qualification marks a historic milestone for Betis, who last appeared in Europe’s premier club competition during the 2005-06 season. They now sit comfortably on 57 points, seven clear of sixth-placed Celta Vigo with only two games remaining.
Relegation Dogfight Intensifies
The night also saw significant movement at the bottom of the table. Levante produced a stunning comeback to defeat Celta Vigo 3-2 at the Balaídos. The victory pulled Levante out of the relegation zone, leaving them as one of five teams tied on 39 points in a desperate scramble for survival.
Celta Vigo’s loss was a double blow, as it effectively ended their slim hopes of overtaking Real Betis for the final Champions League qualifying position.
