ADAMAWA – In a move that signals a significant shift in the North-East political landscape, Adamu Atiku Abubakar, the eldest son of former Vice President and 2023 PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, has officially entered the race for the Red Chamber.
Adamu, a former Commissioner for Works and Energy in Adamawa State, formalised his ambition on Saturday by purchasing the expression of interest and nomination forms to represent Adamawa Central Senatorial District under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
A New Political Path
The decision to run on the ADC platform is particularly noteworthy given his father’s long-standing association with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). However, current political realities in 2026 show a massive realignment. Following his father’s recent move to the ADC in late 2025, Adamu’s candidacy appears to be the first major step in consolidating the family’s influence within their new political home.
Speaking to journalists after obtaining the forms at the party’s secretariat, Adamu emphasized that his mission is born out of a desire to provide “qualitative and result-oriented representation” for the people of Adamawa Central.
”My foray into the senatorial race is not just about a name; it is about a vision for infrastructure, youth empowerment, and a legislative agenda that reflects the yearnings of our people,” Adamu stated.
Family Ties and Political Friction
The move comes just months after speculative reports suggested a rift within the Atiku political dynasty. In early 2026, rumors circulated that some members of the family were leaning toward the ruling APC. However, Adamu’s latest action puts those rumors to rest, firmly placing the Abubakar family’s weight behind the ADC’s “third force” movement.
The ADC has recently gained momentum as a sanctuary for heavyweight politicians from both the PDP and APC, positioning itself as the primary challenger to the status quo ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Dynamics of Adamawa Central
The Adamawa Central Senatorial seat is expected to be one of the most fiercely contested in the upcoming polls. With Adamu Atiku Abubakar now officially in the race, the ADC looks to leverage his experience as a former commissioner and his deep-rooted connections in the state to wrestle the seat from its competitors.
Political analysts suggest that while the “Atiku” brand remains a potent force in Adamawa, Adamu will need to campaign vigorously on his own merit to win over a younger generation of voters who are increasingly looking beyond traditional political lineages.
