MANCHESTER – In a season defined by individual brilliance and a dramatic tactical shift at Old Trafford, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has been officially named the Football Writers’ Association (FWA) Men’s Footballer of the Year for 2026.
The 31-year-old Portuguese international claimed the prestigious honor following a vote by over 900 football journalists, securing 45% of the total ballots. Fernandes narrowly edged out Arsenal’s Declan Rice by just 28 votes, while last year’s winner, Manchester City striker Erling Haaland, finished third.
Breaking the Decade-Long Drought
Fernandes’ victory marks a historic moment for the Red Devils, as he becomes the first Manchester United player to receive the accolade since Wayne Rooney in 2010. His triumph also breaks a nine-year duopoly on the award held by players from Manchester City and Liverpool, a streak dating back to N’Golo Kanté’s win with Chelsea in 2017.
The FWA cited Fernandes’ “consistency, creativity, and transformative leadership” as the deciding factors. Despite a turbulent start to the campaign under former manager Ruben Amorim, Fernandes found a second wind following the appointment of interim boss Michael Carrick.
Record-Breaking Vision
The statistics behind Fernandes’ season are nothing short of elite. Operating primarily from his preferred No. 10 role under Carrick, the midfielder has recorded:
- 8 Goals and 20 Assists across all competitions.
- 120 Chances Created, nearly double the tally of his closest Premier League rival.
- 19 Premier League Assists, leaving him just one shy of the all-time single-season record of 20 shared by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.
”He plays like he refuses to let games drift,” noted one FWA member. “He is the emotional heartbeat of a United side that has finally secured its return to the Champions League.”
Future at Old Trafford
While the award cements his status as a Premier League legend, questions regarding his long-term future remain. Fernandes, whose contract runs until 2027, has previously stated he will not discuss extensions or potential moves until after the 2026 World Cup.
For now, the United faithful can celebrate a captain who has once again proven to be the most influential creative force in English football. Fernandes is expected to receive the trophy at the FWA’s annual awards dinner later this month.
