Tension erupted in the Ikotun area of Lagos State on Wednesday after a 28-year-old woman, Blessing Isioma David, accused a private facility, Tip-Top Solution Hospital, of allegedly withholding one of her newborn twins following delivery.
The claim, which surfaced in a viral video circulating on social media, drew widespread attention and outrage. In the footage, Blessing is seen holding a baby while insisting she gave birth to twins, contrary to what she was reportedly handed after childbirth. Her relatives, visibly upset, demanded answers and called for the arrest of hospital staff over suspected foul play.
Eyewitnesses said the situation caused a stir at the hospital, disrupting normal activities as emotions escalated.
Supporting her claim, a medical report making the rounds online indicated that an earlier scan conducted in March 2026 showed a twin pregnancy. The document noted the presence of two foetuses in different positions, both with normal heart activity, and reportedly of different genders.
Reacting to the allegation, the Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Sunday Babajide, denied any wrongdoing, maintaining that only one baby was delivered.
According to him, the earlier scan suggesting twins was inaccurate, adding that the family had been informed before delivery. He also stated that the woman’s husband was present during childbirth and confirmed that only one baby was delivered.
Babajide acknowledged that the scan, conducted at about 20 weeks, might not have been reliable and admitted that the hospital should have recommended a follow-up scan for confirmation.
The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed it is aware of the incident and has commenced an investigation.
Police spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said the case is being handled with the involvement of relevant professional bodies to ensure a thorough probe. She added that the Area Commander overseeing Area M is supervising the process.
She urged the public to remain calm, assuring that the findings of the investigation would be made public once concluded.
The incident has sparked mixed reactions online, with many Nigerians demanding a transparent investigation, while others have advised caution until official findings are released.
As of the time of reporting, authorities have not confirmed any evidence to substantiate the claim of a missing twin.
