WASHINGTON D.C. – The political atmosphere in Nigeria has taken a diplomatic turn as a prominent Washington-based lobbying firm, Von Batten-Montague-York, L.C., officially announced its intent to petition President Donald Trump and the United States Congress to impose stiff sanctions on Nigerian officials.
The move comes in response to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) recent decision to derecognize the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a development that critics argue is a deliberate attempt to stifle opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Global Magnitsky Framework
In a strongly worded statement released on Wednesday, the firm revealed it would recommend the use of the Global Magnitsky Act. If adopted, these sanctions would trigger:
- The immediate freezing of foreign assets belonging to targeted INEC officials and politicians.
- Restrictive access to the global financial system.
- Strict travel bans on the individuals and their immediate family members.
”Unlike the previous administration, it is not in President Donald Trump’s nature to remain passive in the face of an election being openly undermined,” the firm stated, signaling a shift in U.S.-Nigeria diplomatic relations.
The Atiku Connection
This aggressive lobbying push follows a $1.2 million contract signed in March 2026 by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. The agreement mandates Von Batten-Montague-York to shape U.S. policy conversations around Nigeria’s democratic integrity and manage the international profile of the former Vice President as he positions himself for another run.
INEC Under Fire
The firm’s concerns center on INEC’s capacity to remain neutral. While acknowledging that the commission has the technical ability to manage elections, the firm noted “serious weaknesses” in safeguarding the process against manipulation.
The derecognition of ADC factions, including those led by high-profile figures like David Mark and Nafiu Bala, has effectively paralyzed the party at a critical organizing stage. This has triggered a wave of protests, including the #OccupyINEC rally, which reportedly saw opposition heavyweights Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso joining forces in a rare show of solidarity against the commission’s decisions.
Congressional Briefing
With the U.S. House and Senate currently on Easter recess, the firm plans to brief senior members of the U.S. National Security Council and congressional leadership early next week.
As the 2027 race begins to heat up, the threat of international sanctions adds a new layer of pressure on the Nigerian government to ensure an inclusive and transparent electoral roadmap.
