The Anikulapo-Kuti family has paid a stirring tribute to a cornerstone of their history, Busura Alebiosu, as he marks his 90th milestone. Widely known as “Bush,” Alebiosu stands as a living testament to a rare era of Nigerian history, defined by a friendship with the late Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Kuti, that transcended the chaos of fame and the trials of political exile.
The relationship, which blossomed in the jazz-soaked streets of 1960s London, was built on a foundation of radical loyalty. It was there that Fela, in his characteristic wit, christened Alebiosu “Bush of Africa”—a nod to his friend’s grounded and unshakeable nature. While Fela was the firebrand, often characterized by a bohemian and lavishly generous lifestyle, Alebiosu was the cool shade: disciplined, financially prudent, and intensely protective.
Speaking on behalf of the dynasty, Yeni Anikulapo-Kuti highlighted that Alebiosu’s greatness lay not in the spotlight, but in the silence of his sacrifices.
”He looked after his friend’s children when the friend was not around,” Yeni shared. “When my father was in the United States for months, Uncle Bush was the one who ensured my mother could reach him via NITEL and made sure the house never lacked.”
This support extended to the next generation, with the family noting Alebiosu’s instrumental role in guiding Femi Kuti during the fragile, formative years of his musical career. For the Kutis, Alebiosu was never just an associate; he was the bridge that held the family together when the “Abami Eda” was away or facing the brunt of state persecution.
As he joins the nonagenarian club, the Kuti family’s tribute serves as a poignant reminder that behind every great icon is often a silent pillar whose loyalty never wavered, even after the music stopped.
