ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has ordered the immediate transfer of several police officers to the Force Headquarters in Abuja to face disciplinary proceedings. The move follows a viral video showing the officers allegedly intimidating and harassing two young men during a stop-and-search operation in the Satellite Town area of Lagos.
The directive, issued on Sunday, April 5, 2026, requires the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Satellite Town to produce the identified personnel before the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) on Wednesday, April 8.
The incident, which surfaced on social media on Saturday, was captured by one of the victims using smart eyeglasses. In the footage, which was widely shared by an X user, @ChuksEricE, the officers are seen ordering the occupants of a vehicle to step out.
The situation escalated when the officers allegedly attempted to move the young men and their bags away from the sight of their parked vehicle—a tactic the victims vocally challenged.
”I have never seen a police officer carry a driver to one side to search him away from where his car is parked on the road,” one of the victims is heard saying in the video, questioning the legality of the officers’ conduct.
The Force Media Officer, CSP Aliyu Giwa, confirmed the IGP’s stance on the matter, emphasizing that the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) remains dedicated to upholding professional standards and the rule of law.
”The policemen in the viral video have been identified and appropriate disciplinary actions await them accordingly,” the police statement read. “We seek your support and trust as we fight impunity to a standstill.”
This disciplinary action comes just weeks after a Federal High Court ruling reaffirmed the right of Nigerians to record police officers during public operations, declaring it unlawful for security agents to harass or arrest citizens for documenting such encounters.
Since his inaugural conference in March 2024, IGP Disu has repeatedly stressed that the era of “policing that alienates the people” is over. This summons is seen as a major test of the Force’s commitment to accountability, especially as the nation prepares to observe the 2nd edition of National Police Day on April 7.
