Oyo– Exactly one year after ascending the revered throne of his forefathers, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, the Aláàfin of Oyo, has reflected on a transformative tenure marked by cultural revival, communal harmony, and bold strides toward modernization.
In a heartfelt statement released today, the monarch expressed profound gratitude for the collective support that has defined his reign. “One year has passed since I was entrusted with the sacred responsibility of the throne of my forefathers,” Oba Owoade stated. “Over the past year, we have honored our traditions, reinforced our unity, and taken courageous steps toward a future that embodies the pride and resilience of Oyo.”
Appointed in April 2025 following a rigorous selection process by the Oyomesi kingmakers, Oba Owoade – often hailed as “Owoade I” – has quickly emerged as a unifying figure in Oyo Kingdom, one of Nigeria’s most historic Yoruba empires. Sources from the Oyo State Council of Obas and local reports confirm his first year included landmark events like the revitalized Oyo Mesi Festival, which drew thousands to celebrate ancestral heritage, and partnerships with state government for youth skill programs addressing unemployment in the agrarian region.

The Aláàfin’s initiatives have also tackled pressing challenges. Amid economic pressures and occasional chieftaincy disputes reported in Oyo towns like Iseyin and Saki, he mediated reconciliations that strengthened inter-community ties. Infrastructure highlights include advocacy for road repairs in the palace environs and boreholes in rural areas, funded through traditional levies and donor support. “None of this could be achieved without the steadfast support of our chiefs, elders, youths, and the entire Oyo Kingdom,” he emphasized.
Oba Owoade stressed the communal nature of leadership: “This throne does not belong solely to me; it belongs to all of us. Together, we will continue to build, protect, and uplift the legacy left by our ancestors.” His words resonate deeply in a kingdom tracing its roots to the 17th-century empire of Oranmiyan, where the Aláàfin’s stool symbolizes spiritual and temporal authority.

Looking ahead, the monarch prayed for sustained wisdom, peace, and prosperity. “As we celebrate this first anniversary, I pray for ongoing wisdom, peace, and prosperity in our land. Our journey has only just begun,” he declared. Community leaders echoed this optimism; the Aare Musulumi of Oyo, Alhaji Abdullahi Adeniyi, praised the Aláàfin’s inclusive approach, while youth groups credited his empowerment schemes for training over 500 indigenes in digital skills and agriculture.

As Oyo navigates broader Nigerian issues like inflation and insecurity, Oba Owoade’s reign signals a blend of timeless traditions and forward momentum, positioning the kingdom as a beacon of resilience in Oyo State.
