VATICAN CITY, March 5, 2026 — Archbishop Ettore Balestrero, the Holy See’s Permanent Observer to the UN in Geneva, declared Christians the most persecuted religious group worldwide, citing nearly 400 million facing violence or discrimination—one in seven believers affected. Speaking March 3 at the “Standing with Persecuted Christians” event, he revealed 5,000 faith-related killings in 2025, averaging 13 daily, labeling victims as martyrs challenging power structures while demanding state accountability.
State Duty on Religious Freedom
Balestrero stressed nations must protect worship rights before, during, and after attacks, condemning impunity as a core barrier to justice. He argued states should promote belief freedom as a fundamental human right, avoiding interference in private or public faith practices like teaching and rituals. In Western nations, he criticized “new rights” overriding treaties, citing Europe’s 2,211 violent anti-Christian acts in 2024, including church arsons and arrests for silent prayer near abortion sites.
Subtle Discrimination Exposed
Beyond killings and property seizures, Balestrero highlighted “silent” persecutions like job exclusion, social marginalization, and legal curbs eroding Christian rights. Europe saw 760 hate crimes in 2024 alone, per OIDAC data, with authorities prosecuting Bible quotes on social issues as violations. These acts by supposed protectors undermine human rights, he said, calling for an end to such contradictions.
Cross as Persecution Target
Attacks strike the Cross’s vertical transcendence to God and horizontal community bonds, severing conscience from faith and truth from relationships. Balestrero urged global action amid rising threats, echoing Vatican consistency on the issue, as seen in prior UN addresses on religious violations in one-third of countries. Nigeria, with its security challenges, reflects this crisis where Christians face violence amid broader instability.
