Notorious Drug Kingpin Surrenders After 13-Year Manhunt

​LAGOS – The long arm of the law has finally caught up with Reginald Peter Chidiebere, a suspected drug baron who successfully evaded authorities for over a decade. After thirteen years in the shadows, Chidiebere surrendered to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on February 13, 2026, ending one of the longest-running manhunts in the agency’s recent history.

​A Decade of Deception

​Chidiebere’s legal troubles began in 2013 when he was arrested for attempting to smuggle a massive shipment of cocaine into Nigeria. Following his arraignment before Justice Ayokunle Faji at the Federal High Court in Lagos (Charge No. FHC/L/187c/2923), the suspect was granted bail. However, rather than facing the charges, Chidiebere vanished, jumping bail and sparking a search that would span more than ten years.

​The 2024 Heroin Connection

​The fugitive’s name resurfaced in February 2024 during a high-stakes investigation into a South African drug syndicate. NDLEA operatives at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) intercepted 49.70 kilograms of heroin—the largest single heroin seizure at the Lagos airport to date.

​Intelligence linked Chidiebere as a primary mastermind behind the shipment. A subsequent raid on February 19, 2024, at his property, the Golden Platinum Hotel & Suites in Okota, Lagos, led to the recovery of another 2.20 kilograms of heroin from a guest, Igbuanugo Ebuka ThankGod. While Chidiebere managed to slip away during that raid, the NDLEA moved swiftly to dismantle his financial foundation.

​Financial Suffocation

​The agency secured an interim forfeiture of his multi-million naira hotel and successfully blocked all bank accounts linked to him. Femi Babafemi, the NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, noted that these aggressive financial constraints eventually made it impossible for the kingpin to sustain his life underground.

​”Following these developments, Chidiebere could no longer sustain himself in hiding, prompting his surrender to the agency,” Babafemi stated.

​A Resolute Stance

​Reacting to the development, NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), lauded the persistence of the operatives. He reaffirmed that the agency remains “resolute in dismantling criminal networks,” sending a clear message that time does not grant immunity to those who violate the nation’s drug laws.

​Chidiebere is currently in custody and is expected to face his original 2013 cocaine charges along with fresh counts related to the 2024 heroin consignments.
