​Nigerian chess icon and humanitarian Tunde Onakoya has sparked a global wave of inspiration after revealing the personal health struggle that left him with titanium hip implants and a sobering outlook on his physical longevity.

​The founder of Chess in Slums Africa, who captivated the world in 2024 by breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon in New York’s Times Square, shared that his journey hasn’t just been a battle on the 64 squares, but one for his very mobility.

​A Silent Struggle with Avascular Necrosis

​In a poignant update shared via his social media, Onakoya disclosed that he was diagnosed with Avascular Necrosis (AVN) in 2023. AVN is a grueling condition where the death of bone tissue occurs due to a lack of blood supply, often leading to tiny breaks in the bone and the eventual collapse of the joint.

​For Onakoya, the diagnosis was life-altering. He underwent a total hip replacement surgery that year, a period he describes as one of his darkest.

​”I spent six months in a wheelchair and on crutches with the possibility of never walking again,” Onakoya revealed.

​Living on Borrowed Time?

​The chess master, who has dedicated his life to giving children in underserved communities a “pawn-to-king” transformation, noted that his new titanium hips come with a clinical expiration date—roughly 15 years.

​While modern medical advancements often allow implants to last longer with revision surgeries, the 31-year-old visionary is viewing this timeline as a ticking clock that fuels his urgency for social impact.

​”Now I have titanium hip implants with a lifespan of maybe 15 years,” he stated. “Whatever happens, I’ll make this one life count.”

​Since his surgery, Onakoya has shown no signs of slowing down. From securing scholarships for hundreds of children to advocating for foundational learning at the United Nations, his “15-year” outlook seems to have only sharpened his focus.
