The commercial city of Onitsha was plunged into mourning on Sunday following the brutal murder of a prominent businessman, identified as Mr. Iyke, in the Fegge area of Anambra State.
The deceased, a well-known trader at the Ogbo Ogwu (Bridge Head) Market, was allegedly attacked and killed by his 18-year-old apprentice, Chiemerie, an indigene of Ebonyi State. Reports indicate that the suspect used a heavy wooden pestle to strike his employer during a sudden and violent confrontation.
The incident gained widespread attention after footage of the aftermath was shared by Facebook user OBC Afunwa, showing a crowd gathered at the scene in disbelief. Members of the trading community expressed profound shock, describing the late Iyke as a hardworking entrepreneur.
While the specific motive behind the gruesome killing remains shrouded in mystery, the tragedy has reignited heated debates among South-East traders regarding the traditional “Igba-Boi” (apprenticeship) system. Many are now calling for stricter background checks and psychological evaluations before bringing young wards into their homes and businesses.
As of Monday morning, the Anambra State Police Command has not issued a formal statement, though local sources confirm that the suspect is being sought by authorities. The Fegge community remains on high alert as residents grapple with the horrific nature of the crime.
