ABEOKUTA – A Professor of Statistics at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Olaniyi Olayiwola, has warned that Nigeria’s reliance on “reactive governance” is a major bottleneck to national development. Delivering the University’s 108th Inaugural Lecture on February 11, 2026, the scholar asserted that the nation must urgently integrate predictive statistical models into its planning frameworks to survive in a data-driven global economy.
In his lecture, titled “From Sample to Solution: Harnessing Statistics for Evidence-Based Public Decision-Making in the Data Age,” Prof. Olayiwola described data not as mere numbers, but as “strategic instruments” for social transformation. He noted that while Nigeria generates immense volumes of information, the lack of analytical application leaves policymakers perpetually fighting fires instead of preventing them.

Predictive Solutions for National Crises
Drawing from three decades of research, including his award-winning work on COVID-19 response models, Olayiwola demonstrated how adaptive sampling and spatial regression can solve complex local issues. His recommendations spanned several critical sectors:
- Public Health: Institutionalizing environmental exposure studies for vulnerable populations to move beyond retrospective reporting to active outbreak prevention.
- Education: Adopting “academic analytics” to identify at-risk students early, allowing for targeted mentoring before failure occurs.
- Agriculture: Using statistical optimization to evaluate local resources, ensuring farming practices are both sustainable and cost-effective.
- Aviation: Moving beyond routine checks to longitudinal data archiving for predictive maintenance and accident prevention.
Closing the Evidence-Policy Gap
The Don emphasized that the “persistent gap” between research and policy is fueled by a lack of interdisciplinary collaboration and institutional trust. He called for a restructuring of national development plans to favor Bayesian adaptive sampling and time-series monitoring.
”Statistical research must translate into measurable outcomes,” Olayiwola stated. “Properly analyzed and communicated data is the bedrock of credible evidence and informed public decision-making.”

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, represented by Deputy VC Prof. Olawale Dairo, lauded Olayiwola’s contributions, noting that the lecture marks a significant milestone for the College of Physical Sciences. The event was attended by academic heavyweights, including former Federal Commissioner of Education Prof. Biyi Afonja and former FUNAAB VC Prof. Felix Salako.
