ABUJA — In a landmark move signaling a new era of bilateral cooperation, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu have accepted an invitation from King Charles III for a State Visit to the United Kingdom. Scheduled for March 18 to 19, 2026, the visit marks the first time a Nigerian leader has been accorded this highest level of diplomatic honor in nearly four decades.
The announcement, confirmed by Buckingham Palace and the Nigerian Presidency on Sunday, February 8, 2026, reveals that the Nigerian First Couple will be hosted by the King and Queen Camilla at the historic Windsor Castle.
Breaking a 37-Year Hiatus
The last time a Nigerian Head of State undertook a full State Visit to the UK was in 1989, when the late Queen Elizabeth II hosted General Ibrahim Babangida. Other past recipients of the honor include General Yakubu Gowon (1973) and President Shehu Shagari (1981).
While President Tinubu has met with King Charles on several occasions—including a private meeting at Buckingham Palace in September 2024 and talks during COP28 in Dubai—this official State Visit is a distinct diplomatic upgrade. It will feature the full weight of British pageantry, including:
- A grand carriage procession.
- A formal State Banquet at Windsor Castle.
- High-level political discussions with UK government officials.
Strengthening an £8 Billion Partnership
The visit comes at a time of burgeoning economic synergy. According to the latest UK Department for Business and Trade data, total trade between the two nations reached £8.1 billion in the year to September 2025—an 11.4% year-on-year increase.
”This visit provides an opportunity to further strengthen the enduring partnership between our two nations,” the British High Commission in Nigeria stated.
Key discussion points are expected to include the Enhanced Trade and Investment Partnership (ETIP) signed in 2024, as well as ongoing collaboration in security, climate action, and migration. The UK remains a critical partner in Nigeria’s fight against regional instability, a topic recently underscored by fresh security challenges in Kwara State.
Personal Ties and Soft Power
King Charles III has long maintained a personal affinity for Nigeria, having visited the country four times between 1990 and 2018. His public appreciation for Nigerian culture, ranging from the vibrancy of Afrobeats to the nuances of Pidgin English, has served as a bedrock for modern Anglo-Nigerian relations.
As the most populous nation in Africa and a leading global economy, Nigeria’s “soft power” and its vast diaspora in the UK will be central themes as both leaders look to cement a strategic alliance for the future.
