The 35-year-old underwent surgery in September 2025 to address an undisclosed illness, but soon after, she began suffering excruciating abdominal pain that persisted for four months. Her family claims repeated visits to the hospital yielded only painkillers, with no thorough diagnosis until scans two days before her death on January 12, 2026, revealed a pair of surgical scissors forgotten inside her body.
Umar’s husband, Abubakar Mohammed, shared the devastating account on social media, questioning how trained professionals could overlook such a critical error. “She endured this pain for four months. Efforts for corrective surgery came too late,” he stated, leaving behind five children and a grieving family. The incident has sparked outrage online, with calls for accountability echoing across platforms.
In response, the Kano State Hospitals Management Board, led by Executive Secretary Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda, announced a transparent investigation on January 13, 2026. Public Relations Officer Samira Suleiman emphasized patient safety as a priority, promising impartial action if negligence is confirmed. As of today, January 13, 2026, the family urges the state government and health regulators to deliver justice, highlighting broader concerns over surgical standards in public facilities.
