A prominent youth leader and former President-General of the National Association of Ohafia Students (NAOS), Hon. Igwe Akuma Akwu from Ndi Uma compound, was shot dead on Friday night, January 2, 2026, in Okon-Aku community, Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State. The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. as Akuma and his brothers, Uche Akwu and Acha Akwu, returned from a traditional retirement visit and were accosted by youths from the rival Ndi Owom compound, leading to Akuma being shot in the chest while his brothers sustained leg injuries. Coming barely a week before his scheduled wedding, the killing has ignited widespread mourning and outrage in the community.
Crisis Background
The fatal shooting stems from escalating tensions between Ndi Uma and Ndi Owom compounds, fueled by disputes over access to a traditional compound hall (Obu) after an Igba Ekpe retirement ceremony on December 30, 2025, and a prolonged tussle for the Ezieogo position. On December 30 and 31, 2025, Ndi Owom youths allegedly invaded Ndi Uma, displacing residents and destroying property. Akuma had publicly raised alarms on December 30, 2025, via Facebook, detailing prior attacks including a January 2025 beating, the October 28, 2025 arson of his Toyota Corolla, and the disappearance of a five-year-old cousin during violence.

Retaliation and Destruction
In the aftermath of Akuma’s murder, enraged youths from Ndi Uma reportedly set houses, vehicles, and other properties ablaze in the community. The arson attacks exacerbated the chaos, drawing sharp condemnation from traditional leaders. Eyewitness accounts describe a scene of pandemonium as fires raged through the night.
Traditional Leaders’ Response
The Udumeze of Ohafia, Ezie Ohamoha Awa Orji Udonsi, alongside the Ohafia Council of Monarchs, issued a statement on Saturday, January 3, 2026, denouncing the “gruesome murder” of Akuma and the subsequent destruction as unjustifiable, especially at the start of the new year. They urged calm between the warring compounds and affirmed collaboration with security agencies to curb escalation. The leaders emphasized that no provocation warrants killing an Ohafia son.
Police Action
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ohafia led officers to the scene, arresting several suspects now under interrogation. Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, confirmed deployment of tactical teams to restore peace. Investigations continue amid calls for justice and resolution of the underlying communal rift.
