The Federal Government named Dr. (Mrs.) Sarah Titilola Ibiyemi as the pioneering female Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Abeokuta, Ogun State, marking a significant breakthrough for the institution established in 1993. This appointment ends over three decades without female leadership at the top, succeeding Prof. Adewale Abdul-Samiu Musa, who served from July 2017 until this transition. The honour reflects growing recognition of women’s roles in Nigeria’s public health leadership.
Dr. Ishaq Kunle Salako, Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, personally handed over the appointment letter, praising Ibiyemi’s exceptional professional record and enduring impact on healthcare delivery. Salako, an Ogun State indigene with prior roles like Chairman of the Ogun Hospitals Management Board, recently commissioned infrastructure projects at FMC Abeokuta, underscoring federal commitment to the facility. His involvement highlights coordinated efforts to bolster regional health services.
FMC Abeokuta, a 750-bed specialist hospital serving Ogun and neighbouring states, has evolved from humble origins at the former State Hospital, Idi-Aba, into a hub for advanced care, training, and research with over 50 specialists. Achievements include Nigeria’s first trans-oesophageal echocardiography and Siamese twin separations, aligning with its mission for multidisciplinary, cost-effective tertiary services. Ibiyemi’s tenure promises to advance this legacy amid national health reforms.
