Bollywood legend Dharmendra, affectionately known as the industry’s “He-Man,” passed away at the age of 89 on Monday in Mumbai, just days before his 90th birthday on December 8, 2025. The veteran actor, whose career spanned over six decades and more than 300 films, had been in and out of hospital in recent weeks after suffering from breathlessness. His death was confirmed by police and his doctor, marking the end of a remarkable era in Indian cinema .

Dharmendra rose to fame in the 1960s and became a dominant figure in 1970s and 1980s Bollywood, renowned for his unique blend of action hero charisma and romantic charm. His breakout came with “Phool Aur Patthar” (1966), but his portrayal of Veeru in the cult classic “Sholay” (1975) solidified his place as a cinematic icon. Alongside Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra’s on-screen chemistry captured the hearts of millions, while his romantic pairings with actress Hema Malini, whom he later married, formed one of Bollywood’s most beloved collaborations .

Born Dharmendra Kewal Krishan Deol in Punjab in 1935 to a farming family, he moved to Mumbai in the late 1950s to pursue acting. Over his extensive career, he evolved from romantic leads to revered character roles, often playing paternal figures in the later decades. His contribution to Indian cinema was recognized with the Padma Bhushan award in 2012, one of India’s highest civilian honors .

Dharmendra’s personal life was complex and widely publicized. Married first to Prakash Kaur, with whom he had four children including actors Sunny and Bobby Deol, he later married Hema Malini in 1980 without divorcing his first wife, reportedly converting briefly to Islam to circumvent legal issues around remarriage. He and Malini had two daughters, including actress Esha Deol, continuing the family legacy in Bollywood .
In addition to his cinematic achievements, Dharmendra briefly ventured into politics as a Bharatiya Janata Party lawmaker in India’s Parliament from 2004 to 2009. His last film appearance was in the war biopic “Ikkis,” which is scheduled for release in late 2025 .

Dharmendra is survived by his wives, children, and grandchildren, leaving behind a towering legacy as one of Bollywood’s most cherished stars. Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourned his passing, calling it the end of an era and praising Dharmendra’s charm, depth, and versatile talent that struck a chord with millions .
