The Nigerian Federal Government has launched a new digital platform called the “Thank A Soldier” QR Code, designed to allow Nigerians both home and abroad to send personalized messages of appreciation to serving military personnel and pay tribute to fallen heroes. This initiative was officially unveiled by the Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar Badaru, and marks the start of activities for the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day (AFCRD), which aims to honor the sacrifices and valor of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

The “Thank A Soldier” QR Code platform provides an interactive means for citizens to express their gratitude and support to troops through personalized messages. It underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing the bond between the military and the public, fostering patriotism, and promoting recognition of the armed forces’ sacrifices. The launch event took place at the National Defence College in Abuja, with the Chief of Defence Staff General Olufemi Oluyede, Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, and other service chiefs in attendance. The platform aims to deepen public engagement and patriotic consciousness, particularly among youths and civil society groups.

2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day
The 2026 AFCRD is themed “Valour, Sacrifice and Unity: Honouring Our Heroes,” emphasizing the courage and selflessness characteristic of Nigeria’s military personnel. The month-long commemorative events include a National Emblem Appeal launch by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on November 27, 2025, special religious services in January 2026, a national symposium, community outreach activities, a gala dinner, and the climax wreath-laying ceremony at the National Arcade in Abuja on January 15, 2026. These activities are designed to honor past and present members of the armed forces and reinforce national solidarity and support for military initiatives.

Minister of Defence Badaru highlighted the government’s renewed focus on protecting officers who act within the law and on improving troop welfare through sustained reforms. He commended the military’s achievements under President Tinubu’s administration, including neutralizing over 13,000 terrorists and criminals, rescuing nearly 10,000 hostages, and arresting more than 17,000 suspects nationwide. The launch of the “Thank A Soldier” QR Code is part of broader efforts to ensure that the sacrifices of military personnel are recognized and remembered by all Nigerians.
