In a significant move to strengthen Nigeria’s defence architecture, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed new service chiefs, each bringing a wealth of experience and strategic insight to their roles. These appointments signal a renewed commitment to tackling security challenges across the nation.

Major General Waidi Shaibu, the new Chief of Army Staff, was born on December 18, 1971, in Kogi State. Commissioned into the Nigerian Army Armour Corps in 1994, Shaibu is a consummate scholar with a Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering from the Nigerian Defence Academy. He also holds multiple advanced degrees including Public Administration, Strategic Studies from Nigerian and international institutions, and is pursuing a PhD. His military education spans diverse operational and leadership training across Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and the USA. Shaibu has commanded numerous operations in Nigeria’s northeast and participated in international peacekeeping missions in Liberia and Sudan. His leadership in Operation Hadin Kai stands out, where he implemented successful counter-insurgency tactics and fostered civil-military cooperation. Shaibu’s distinguished service is adorned with numerous medals, including the Distinguished Service Star and Purple Heart for counter-insurgency .

Rear Admiral Idi Abbas, the Chief of Naval Staff, hails from Kano State and was commissioned in 1992. With over three decades in the Nigerian Navy, Abbas has excelled in maritime security, particularly in the Niger Delta where he curbed oil theft and piracy. He has held key commands and currently contributes to strategic policy at the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre. His operational leadership emphasizes safeguarding Nigeria’s coastal and maritime interests .

Air Vice Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, Nigeria’s 23rd Chief of Air Staff, was born in 1972 in Makurdi but hails from Enugu State. He holds a BSc in Physics and multiple master’s degrees in International Affairs, Political Economy, and has a PhD in view. Aneke is a seasoned pilot with over 4,300 flying hours on various aircraft. His distinguished operational career includes intelligence and reconnaissance roles in counter-insurgency, and peacekeeping in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Aneke also brings strategic insight from his roles in air mobility and training commands, and his leadership is characterized by professionalism, integrity, and calmness under pressure .

Major General Emmanuel Akomaye Parker Undiandeye, the Chief of Defence Intelligence, born in 1968 in Cross River State, completed cadet training at the Nigerian Defence Academy and Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, UK. He possesses a BA in History and a Master’s in Strategic Security Studies. An alumnus of top security programs globally including Harvard Kennedy School and the National Defence University Washington, Undiandeye has served in critical intelligence, operational, and peacekeeping roles, including senior positions at the UN and Nigerian Defence Headquarters. His tenure as Chief of Defence Intelligence since 2023 has strengthened Nigeria’s intelligence coordination and operations .

Lieutenant General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede, the Chief of Defence Staff, was born in 1968 in Ekiti State. A graduate of the Nigerian Defence Academy with a career starting in 1987, Oluyede rose through diverse command and staff roles within infantry and peacekeeping operations, including the ECOMOG mission and Operation Hadin Kai. He is noted for his operational acumen, strategic leadership, and dedication to troop welfare, leading to stability in critical areas like the Niger Delta. Since becoming Chief of Army Staff in late 2024 and subsequently Chief of Defence Staff in 2025, Oluyede has prioritized troop morale, operational readiness, and the modernization of the Nigerian Army’s capabilities. His leadership reflects a blend of combat experience, intellectual rigor, and humanitarian discipline .

Together, these leaders bring varied but complementary expertise to Nigeria’s defence forces, poised to steer military operations and national security policies effectively as the nation confronts ongoing and emerging security threats.
