Former President Olusegun Obasanjo led family members and dignitaries on Saturday in Abeokuta to commemorate the 20th memorial service of his late wife and former First Lady, Stella Obasanjo. The service took place at the Chapel of Christ the King of Glory within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library and was attended by notable guests including the couple’s only son, Olumuyiwa Obasanjo; Stella’s younger brother, John Abebe; and former Ogun State governors Gbenga Daniel and Ibikunle Amosun.
In brief remarks after the service, Obasanjo described his late wife as a woman who dedicated her life to service. “We came to celebrate a life of service,” he said, highlighting her legacy of selflessness and compassion. Her son Olumuyiwa remembered Stella as a loving, disciplined woman whose teachings remain a guiding light. He praised her protective nature as a mother and the strict values she instilled, saying her legacy continues to inspire him. Stella’s brother John Abebe recalled her infectious smile and uplifting spirit that so often brought comfort in difficult times, notably when she helped ease family grief after their eldest brother’s passing.
Former Governor Ibikunle Amosun lauded Stella Obasanjo’s grace and compassion, emphasizing her efforts to support the less privileged during her tenure as First Lady. Similarly, Gbenga Daniel recalled Stella’s lasting contributions to Ogun State, including the naming of the motherless home after her. The memorial service sermon, delivered by former Aso Villa Chaplain Prof Yusuf Obaje, spotlighted Stella’s immortalized name through her remarkable service to humanity and called on Nigerians to remain committed to national greatness.
Stella Obasanjo passed away on October 23, 2005, at age 59 due to complications from surgery in Spain. Her legacy endures through institutions bearing her name, such as the Stella Obasanjo Hospital in Benin City and the Stella Obasanjo Children’s Home in Abeokuta, alongside the enduring values she imparted to family and the nation.
