Olukemi Ibikunle, a Nigerian corrections officer serving with the United Nations Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO), has been honoured as the 2025 recipient of the UN Trailblazer Award for Women Justice and Corrections Officers. This prestigious award recognises her exceptional leadership in modernising prison infrastructure and pioneering rehabilitation projects that align detention conditions with international standards, all within a challenging peacekeeping environment.
Ibikunle, who has dedicated multiple years to MONUSCO missions starting in 2020 and returning in 2023, spearheaded the construction of an advanced security prison block in Kabare designed for high-risk detainees, including armed group members. She also crafted a model prison design blueprint to guide nationwide improvements in detention facilities in the DRC. Among her acclaimed projects is the innovative Biogas initiative at Uvira Prison, which converts waste into clean energy, improving environmental conditions and offering inmates vocational skills to aid their reintegration.
In a traditionally male-dominated technical field, Ibikunle’s work breaks gender barriers while championing the belief that “Peace begins behind prison walls.” Her efforts highlight the critical role of safety, dignity, and rehabilitation in justice systems as foundational to sustainable peacebuilding.
The UN Trailblazer Award, inaugurated in 2022, recognises the outstanding contributions of women officers deployed in UN peace operations and promotes gender parity and inclusivity. Ibikunle’s recognition shines a spotlight on how women leaders are transforming justice and corrections sectors globally.
