As Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, marks its 63rd anniversary, the institution faces a significant challenge with the ongoing loss of skilled academic and non-academic staff to better opportunities both within Nigeria and abroad. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adamu Ahmed, disclosed this pressing issue during a press conference held in Zaria as part of the anniversary celebrations.
Prof. Ahmed lamented that the university has seen nearly 2,000 staff members leave over the past five years, a sharp consequence of a combination of brain drain, poor remuneration, and crippling infrastructure decay. “The ageing infrastructure and inadequate pay have severely dampened staff motivation,” he stated. The mass departure threatens the university’s ability to maintain its academic standards and conduct leading research activities, placing vital programmes at risk.
One critical concern is that some university programmes currently rely on a predominantly senior academic cadre, with about 95 percent of the staff in one specific programme being professors. “This situation poses a risk of losing accreditation in the future due to the insufficient number of younger staff to replace experienced professors,” the Vice-Chancellor noted.
Funding constraints continue to hobble the university’s operations, limiting renovations, library development, and research support. However, ABU remains committed to revitalizing its educational offerings by embracing technology and innovative teaching methods. The Vice-Chancellor highlighted plans to strengthen the Distance Learning Centre (DLC), the largest in Nigeria, to expand educational access and contribute toward achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in inclusive education and reducing inequality.
Prof. Ahmed also appealed to ABU’s alumni to support the university financially through endowment funds and donations, emphasizing the community’s role in securing the future of one of Nigeria’s leading academic institutions. He further praised the federal government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for implementing bold reforms in the economy and education sector, which provide a foundation for tackling some of these challenges.
The 63rd anniversary serves as a reflective moment for ABU as it continues to strive for excellence amid adversity, reinforcing its historic role as a major contributor to Nigeria’s educational and socio-economic development.
