A powerful explosion rocked Chevron’s El Segundo oil refinery in southern California on Thursday evening, igniting a massive fireball that lit up the night sky and sent thick plumes of smoke soaring for miles across the South Bay area. Videos and images shared online by residents showed flames bursting skyward with a loud, extended roar around 9:30 p.m. local time.

The El Segundo refinery, the largest on the U.S. West Coast with a processing capacity exceeding 276,000 barrels of crude oil daily, was engulfed by the blaze which emergency responders quickly contained to a single section of the vast industrial facility. The refinery covers about 1,000 acres and includes 1,100 miles of pipelines, primarily producing gasoline, jet fuel, and diesel.
Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly Mitchell confirmed that firefighting crews successfully restricted the fire to one area within the refinery grounds, reassuring the public that there was no reason for alarm or evacuation orders in El Segundo or neighboring communities. “It has been contained and there is no cause for alarm for El Segundo or the surrounding areas,” she said. Residents in the immediate vicinity were advised to remain indoors as a precaution due to potential air quality concerns.

El Segundo Mayor Chris Pimentel reported no injuries so far and stated that all refinery personnel were accounted for. The precise cause of the explosion remains under investigation.
California Governor Gavin Newsom has been briefed on the incident and his office confirmed ongoing coordination with local and state agencies to safeguard public safety and protect surrounding communities.
The refinery, operational since 1911 and responsible for about 16 percent of California’s daily refining capacity, maintains its own on-site fire department which led initial firefighting efforts, supported by local and regional emergency teams.
As of the latest updates, the intensity of the flames has decreased significantly, although smoke and some fire activity remain visible. Officials continue to monitor the situation closely with updates expected as the investigation and cleanup proceed.

This incident highlights the critical importance of safety measures at major energy infrastructure sites given their vital role in regional and national fuel supply chains.
Further details will be provided as the story develops.
