As Bayelsa State turns 29 on October 1, 2025, Governor Senator Douye Diri has hailed the acquisition of a 60-megawatt gas turbine as a game-changing milestone for the state’s power supply and overall development. Announced during the twin celebrations of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day and Bayelsa’s statehood anniversary, the governor emphasized that the turbine’s full installation will ensure uninterrupted, round-the-clock electricity for Yenagoa and its environs, a feat poised to transform household energy costs, stimulate business investments, and generate employment opportunities for residents .
Governor Diri described the project as a pivotal step toward economic revitalization, noting that it would not only guarantee reliable power but also foster broader socio-economic benefits. This power breakthrough comes amid efforts to overcome challenges caused by past vandalism of power infrastructure, with the project’s completion targeted before the end of 2025 .
Infrastructure and Youth Development in Focus
Beyond power supply, the governor highlighted other key infrastructure projects under his Assured Prosperity administration. A modern nine-storey State Secretariat complex is nearing completion to enhance administrative efficiency and provide a conducive work environment for public servants. Also under construction is a state-of-the-art, 25,000-capacity Olympic-standard stadium at Igbogene, Yenagoa, which is set to nurture youth sports talent and elevate Bayelsa’s profile nationally and internationally. This stadium is earmarked to host major events, including a bid for the 2028 National Sports Festival, showcasing the state’s commitment to youth empowerment and sports development .
Education Advancement Underlines Progress
Governor Diri also proudly reported significant progress in Bayelsa’s education sector. The state has continued to record strong academic performances, placing among the top five Nigerian states in recent NECO results. Strategic investments in education are reflected in the establishment of science, technical, and vocational colleges across all local government areas, including fully operational centers at Ayamasa, Ofoni, Swali, Sampou, and Opume, with others nearing completion in Brass, Igbeta-Ewoma, and Oporoma. These initiatives aim to provide pragmatic, skills-based learning to support the state’s future workforce and socio-economic development .
A Call for Unity and Collective Progress
Reflecting on Bayelsa’s journey since its creation, Governor Diri urged citizens to value the state’s hard-earned self-determination and the responsibilities it entails. He painted a picture of a growing and inclusive Bayelsa where political divisions are minimized and development is fairly distributed across all communities. The governor encouraged a renewed collective commitment to unity, hard work, and wise stewardship to secure a prosperous future for Bayelsa and its people .
