On Sunday morning at approximately 10:25 a.m., tragedy struck The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, when a 40-year-old man from nearby Burton drove his vehicle through the front doors of the church and opened fire, fatally wounding one person and injuring nine others during a service attended by over a hundred worshippers. Following the shooting, the assailant allegedly set the church on fire before being confronted and killed in an exchange of gunfire with local police and a Department of Natural Resources officer.
The incident, which has left the community shaken, prompted a swift response from local law enforcement and federal agents, with the FBI deploying over 100 agents to assist in the ongoing investigation. Authorities have assured the public there is no further threat, while cautioning that additional victims may be uncovered once the fire-damaged church is fully secured and examined.
Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye confirmed the suspect’s identity has not yet been released and that investigators are currently scrutinizing his residence and cellphone records to determine a motive. The church’s leaders remain in communication with law enforcement as they extend support to their congregation and the families affected by this violent crime.
US President Donald Trump condemned the attack on his Truth Social platform, describing it as “yet another targeted assault on Christians in the United States of America.” Trump highlighted the prompt FBI involvement and pledged that his administration would keep the public informed as the investigation unfolds. He urged prayers for the victims and their families during this difficult time.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer also expressed her sorrow and outrage, emphasizing that violence in any place of worship is intolerable.
This harrowing event echoes a broader concern over violent attacks on religious institutions and communities, renewing calls for efforts to enhance security and prevent future tragedies at places of worship across the nation. The investigation continues as authorities work to piece together the full circumstances surrounding the attack .
