President Bola Ahmed Tinubu convened a closed-door meeting on Monday evening with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Governor Fubara arrived at the Villa around 6:30 p.m., dressed in a white caftan and black cap, and was warmly received by the President before both proceeded for private talks.
This interaction marks their first official engagement since the Federal Government lifted the six-month state of emergency in Rivers State last week, culminating in Governor Fubara’s return to office on September 19. The emergency rule, which was declared in March amid a severe political crisis characterized by disputes between Governor Fubara and the state House of Assembly, was lifted in response to notable progress toward restoring peace and normal governance in Nigeria’s oil-rich state.
Details of the meeting remain undisclosed, however, the discussions are expected to center on consolidating the restored peace and ensuring the smooth functioning of the democratic institutions as Rivers State resumes full democratic governance. President Tinubu had earlier lifted the emergency rule citing a groundswell of new understanding and enthusiasm among stakeholders in the state, highlighting the importance of harmony for delivering democratic dividends.
This meeting signals a pivotal moment in stabilizing the political climate in Rivers State and reinforcing the federal commitment to peaceful, inclusive governance as normalcy returns after a challenging political impasse
