Prominent Nigerian media executive and politician, Chief Dele Momodu, has announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), marking a significant shift in Edo State’s political landscape.
In a statement released on Thursday, Momodu decried what he described as “antidemocratic forces” seizing control of the party, both internally and externally. According to him, the once-formidable PDP has been taken over “in broad daylight,” forcing many long-standing members to seek alternatives.

“Our party has been unarguably hijacked by antidemocratic forces, from within and outside, in broad daylight. It is therefore honorable to abandon the carcass of the party to them while majority of us earnestly sign up with the new coalition party known as the African Democratic Congress (ADC),” Momodu wrote in his resignation addressed to PDP Ward 4 in Ihievbe, Owan East Local Government Area, Edo State.
He expressed gratitude to colleagues and the party structure for their support over the years and emphasized his commitment to contributing positively to the nation’s political evolution.
Context and Implications
- Party Crisis: The PDP has recently faced a series of defections, accusations of internal sabotage, and leadership tussles, raising concerns about its future cohesion.
- African Democratic Congress (ADC): The ADC has positioned itself as a new coalition force, attracting aggrieved members from other political parties disillusioned by what they perceive as undemocratic practices.
- Broader Trend: Analysts note that this resignation is emblematic of a wider trend of major realignments in Nigeria’s opposition blocks as 2027 general elections approach.
Momodu’s move is expected to influence not just his followers but also other key figures who may be contemplating their future within the PDP. Political observers will be watching closely to see how this deepens the party’s challenges and boosts the ADC’s profile heading into future elections.
