Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic — A night of celebration turned into tragedy early Tuesday morning as the roof of the iconic Jet Set nightclub collapsed during a packed merengue concert, claiming the lives of at least 184 people, including beloved merengue star Rubby Pérez. Rescue efforts concluded Wednesday, leaving families to grapple with devastating loss.

The 69-year-old Pérez, known as the “loudest voice of merengue,” tragically perished after being trapped beneath the rubble. His daughter revealed that rescuers located him after hearing him singing, a poignant testament to his dedication even in his final moments. Video footage captured the horrifying moment of the collapse, showing Pérez performing before the roof caved in amidst screams.
The casualty count surged past 184, with over 155 individuals hospitalized, painting a grim picture of the disaster’s scale. Among the victims were former Major League Baseball players Octavio Dotel and Tony Blanco, who heroically saved their friend Esteban Germán by pushing him away from falling debris, sacrificing their own lives. Nelsy Cruz, the provincial governor and sister of MLB star Nelson Cruz, also tragically died after managing to alert the president from beneath the wreckage.
The cause of the collapse remains a mystery, sparking urgent calls for a thorough investigation. The 50-year-old Jet Set nightclub, a cultural landmark central to the Dominican Republic’s vibrant merengue scene, had a history of past incidents, including a fire caused by a lightning strike in 2023. Authorities have pledged full transparency, prioritizing the search for survivors before assigning blame.
“We share in the immense pain of the affected families and are committed to collaborating transparently with authorities,” stated a representative from Club Jet Set.
President Luis Abinader expressed his condolences, stating, “All agencies worked tirelessly throughout the rescue operation. Our prayers are with the families who have lost loved ones.”
The loss of Rubby Pérez, a former lead vocalist for Wilfrido Vargas, has sent shockwaves through the music industry and the nation. His iconic hits, such as “Volver” and “Enamórate de Ella,” cemented his status as a merengue legend. The Jet Set nightclub, hosting over 300 guests for Pérez’s performance, was a cornerstone of Dominican cultural life, making the tragedy even more profound. As the nation mourns, questions surrounding the collapse’s cause remain, demanding answers and accountability.
