A series of gruesome murders and disappearances in Nigerian hotels have exposed a chilling pattern of staff collusion, ritual killings, and organized crime. From Delta to Anambra, guests checking into lodgings have met horrific fates—stabbed, mutilated, or buried in shallow graves—with hotel employees often playing key roles in facilitating these crimes.
The Murder of Pastor Sunday Ogofotha
Pastor Sunday Ogofotha checked into Century Home Hotel in Delta State on March 21, 2025, ahead of his brother’s funeral. By morning, he was dead—stabbed multiple times and tied to his bed. Key details:
- Staff Complicity: Hotel manager Godwin Iboirode confessed to allowing two men (Johnson and Clement) access to Ogofotha’s room in exchange for a promised ₦5 million payout. The killers stole the pastor’s ATM cards and withdrew funds post-mortem.
- History of Violence: Locals revealed the hotel had prior links to murders, including a POS operator, Bethel, allegedly killed and buried on-site by the security guard over a ₦10,000 dispute.
- Cover-Up Attempts: The hotel owner, Joseph Ogbole, claimed ignorance, but the community razed the hotel in retaliation. Police arrested five staff members, though investigations remain ongoing.
Anambra’s Shallow Graves and Ritual Killings
In January 2025, security forces raided Udoka Golden Point Hotel in Anambra, uncovering over 30 shallow graves, decomposing bodies, and a shrine. The state government demolished the facility, citing its use for kidnapping and ritual activities. Commissioner Dr. Law Mefor stated, “There is no way the owner can extricate himself from these crimes”.
Other Notable Cases
- Olamide Akinolu: Murdered in November 2024 at a Wadoye hotel after paying ₦50,000 for musical instruments. Attackers left him vomiting blood; the hotel was later vandalized by enraged locals.
- Esther Isaac: A 21-year-old killed in a Gwarinpa hotel (FCT) in 2022. Her brother accused police of inaction and the hotel of disabling CCTV to hide evidence.
- Timothy Adegoke: A 2021 case involving Hilton Hotels in Osun State. The MBA student was beaten to death, buried in a shallow grave, and the owner, Dr. Ramon Adedoyin, was sentenced to death in 2023. The conviction was upheld in 2025.
Patterns and Motives
- Ritual Killings: Suspicions of occult practices persist, echoing the 1996 Otokoto case where an 11-year-old was dismembered in a hotel. Clinical haematologist Timothy Brown noted, “These crimes thrive in secrecy, often linked to organ harvesting or ritual economies”.
- Psychological Drivers: Psychologist Olubunmi Onipede linked such violence to childhood trauma, creating “psychopaths who methodically target victims”.
Safety Recommendations
Security expert Stanley Ihakpe advised:
“Research hotels thoroughly—check reviews, locations, and safety ratings. Travelers should inform loved ones of their whereabouts and avoid isolated lodgings.”
Ongoing Investigations
While arrests have been made in some cases, many questions remain. Delta State Police PPRO Bright Edafe emphasized, “Victims’ proactive communication with family—like Pastor Sunday’s final call—is critical to solving these crimes”.
These cases underscore a dire need for stricter hotel regulations, improved security oversight, and public vigilance to dismantle Nigeria’s hospitality crime networks.
