The Oyo State House of Assembly has initiated discussions on a proposed bill to increase the salaries of political office holders in the state. The bill successfully passed its first and second readings during Tuesday’s plenary session.
Titled “A Bill for a Law to Further Amend the Remuneration Package of Political Office Holders in Oyo State Law 2001,” the legislation was introduced by Hon. Sanjo Adedoyin, the Majority Leader representing Ogbomoso South constituency. The proposal seeks to revise the current salary structure for elected and appointed officials, citing factors such as inflation, prevailing economic conditions, and the need to attract and retain competent leaders as justification for the adjustments.
During deliberations, Speaker Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin emphasized the increasing financial pressures on public officials, noting that their current remuneration does not adequately reflect the rising cost of living or the responsibilities associated with their roles.
As lawmakers continue to debate the bill’s merits in its second reading, public attention remains focused on whether the Assembly will prioritize salary increases for political office holders over addressing critical needs within the state.
