The queues for Premium Motor Spirit, commonly known as petrol, worsened in Abuja and neighboring Nasarawa and Niger states on Thursday.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited attributed the situation to logistics issues, but assured that it had been resolved.
Despite the resolution, petrol remained scarce in the Federal Capital Territory and some northern states, leading to the closure of many filling stations.
Those still operating faced heavy queues, with independent marketers increasing the product’s price to an average of N700/litre.
However, NNPC retail outlets maintained the approved price of N617/litre.
According to oil marketers, the supply of PMS through the Suleja Depot in Niger State, which serves Abuja and its environs, remained poor.
They noted a reduction in fuel trucks coming to Suleja Depot and other northern depots compared to previous times.
This scarcity caused disruptions in transportation, resulting in stranded commuters and increased transport fares.

Mohammed Shuaibu, Secretary of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Abuja-Suleja Branch, highlighted the low supply of PMS to the capital city and its environs.
Shuaibu explained that while NNPC retail stations maintained the uniform price of N617/litre, other marketers sold at arbitrary prices, some as high as N700/litre.
He suggested that inadequate importation by NNPC might contribute to the shortage.
He urged the government to intervene by ensuring increased petrol supply through NNPC to alleviate panic buying among motorists.
In response, NNPC’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, acknowledged the scarcity’s cause as logistics issues, assuring that they had been resolved.
He emphasized that petrol prices remained stable and urged Nigerians to avoid panic buying, emphasizing the adequacy of petrol supply in the country.
