ABUJA — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a final six-month tenure extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi. The decision aims to give the Customs boss enough time to finalize major port reforms and secure an orderly leadership transition within the agency.
The announcement was made public on Friday through a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
Driving the National Single Window
Adeniyi’s initial tenure extension was scheduled to wind down on August 1, 2026. With this latest presidential directive, his leadership has been pushed forward to February 2027.
According to the Presidency, this strategic window is critical for consolidating the rollout of the National Single Window (NSW) project. The NSW is a cross-border electronic platform designed to link various government agencies and shipping stakeholders, streamlining trade facilitation and significantly boosting revenue generation at the country’s entry points.
Managing Succession and Internal Reforms
Beyond trade technology, the six-month transition period tasks Adeniyi with cleaning up internal administration alongside the Nigeria Customs Service Board. His core responsibilities before his ultimate exit include:
- Overseeing the promotion of qualified officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs.
- Enforcing mandatory retirements for personnel who have clocked the 35-year service milestone or reached the 60-year age limit.
A Career Built on the Ranks
Adeniyi’s extension caps off an expansive career within the service spanning nearly four decades. After graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, in the late 1980s, he joined the NCS and steadily climbed the organizational ladder.
His career progression highlights a long-term internal rise:
- 2012: Deputy Comptroller
- 2017: Comptroller
- 2020: Assistant Comptroller-General
- January 2023: Acting Deputy Comptroller-General
- June 2023: Appointed Comptroller-General by President Tinubu
With the countdown to February 2027 underway, all eyes are on the Customs chief to see how effectively the Single Window initiative solidifies under his final stretch of leadership.
