Security Crisis Deepens in North-Central as Seven Kidnap Victims Escape, Three Vigilantes Die

Seven kidnapped victims have regained their freedom in Benue, but hundreds of kilometres away, the security burden carried by local vigilantes ended in tragedy as three of them were reportedly killed in Plateau State.

Troops of Operation Whirl Stroke, working with the police and local vigilantes, have rescued seven kidnapped victims from a suspected kidnappers’ enclave in Ohimini Local Government Area of Benue State.

The operation was carried out after security personnel received intelligence about a suspected kidnappers’ hideout in the area.

According to the report, the victims were rescued from the suspected enclave after security forces moved against the criminals.

The Benue operation represents a significant intervention against kidnapping in an area where communities have continued to rely on a combination of formal security personnel and local vigilantes.

Meanwhile, a separate attack in Plateau State has resulted in the reported deaths of three vigilantes.

The vigilantes were reportedly killed by armed men in NTV community, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, on Tuesday night. The incident highlights the risks faced by local security volunteers who operate close to communities vulnerable to attacks.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the two incidents present sharply different outcomes in the North-Central security landscape: seven abducted people were rescued in Benue, while three people involved in community security were killed in Plateau.

The contrasting developments also raise a larger question about the sustainability of relying heavily on vigilantes without adequate intelligence, equipment, coordination and protection.

The responsibility for protecting lives cannot ultimately be transferred to civilians carrying out informal security duties. The state remains responsible for maintaining lawful security structures and ensuring that communities are protected.

The Benue rescue offers evidence that coordinated operations can save lives, while the Plateau deaths demonstrate the human cost when communities remain exposed to armed violence.
