UK Court Hears Trial Over Fatal Punch on Elizabeth Line Worker

​LONDON — Legal proceedings are underway at the Inner London Crown Court concerning the tragic death of 61-year-old Elizabeth Line employee Jorge Ortega, who was fatally struck after a passenger missed a train.

​The incident occurred on the evening of December 4, 2024, at Ilford station in east London. Court disclosures revealed that 30-year-old Ayodele Jamgbadi became agitated and began kicking an advertising frame on the platform after missing a service heading toward Stratford.

​Ortega, a customer experience assistant and member of the RMT union, approached the suspect alongside two colleagues in an effort to calm the situation. According to prosecutor Patrick Dennis, CCTV footage and witness testimony established that Ortega began retreating as Jamgbadi turned toward him. Jamgbadi then delivered a high-impact punch to Ortega’s face near the temple.

​The force of the blow rendered Ortega instantly unconscious, causing him to fall backward and strike his head violently against the concrete platform. He sustained a severe traumatic brain injury and passed away two days later on December 6, 2024.

​During the investigation, police arrested Jamgbadi, who reportedly admitted to the strike, telling British Transport Police officers: “I punched him in the face, I literally punched him in the face”.

​Because medical assessments determined that Jamgbadi is currently mentally unwell and receiving hospital treatment, he has been deemed unfit to enter a plea or stand trial in a conventional manner. Consequently, Judge Benedict Kelleher directed the court to proceed with a “trial of issues”. Under this legal framework, the jury is not tasked with determining criminal intent, but must specifically rule on whether the defendant physically delivered the fatal punch and if that blow directly caused Ortega’s death.

​The ongoing case has reignited intense safety debates across the United Kingdom, with transport unions and industry bodies renewing calls for heightened security and robust protective measures for frontline railway staff working late-hour and high-traffic shifts.
