A final-year university student should be preparing for the final steps towards graduation. Instead, Obafemi Awolowo University is dealing with the death of one of its students and an investigation into what happened.

Police have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Oluwole Oluwaseun, a final-year student of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at OAU, Ile-Ife.

The university said it received information about an emergency at an apartment in the Damico Area, Ooni Layout, at about 1:30pm on Tuesday.

According to the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olanrewaju, its Quick Response and Security Team went to the location and contacted the police.

Police officers from the ‘A’ Division, Moore, Ile-Ife, subsequently joined university security personnel at the scene.

Some reports have described the death as suicide, but the police investigation means that the circumstances should not be treated as conclusively established until investigators complete their work.

That distinction is important.

A young person’s death deserves compassion, but responsible journalism also requires restraint. Speculation can deepen the pain of grieving families and can interfere with a proper understanding of what happened.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the immediate priority should be an impartial investigation capable of establishing the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.

ValidViewNetwork had earlier stated that reports involving deaths, particularly those involving young people, must distinguish confirmed facts from preliminary accounts.

The university community deserves answers. The family deserves dignity. And the investigation deserves enough space to establish the truth.

Until the facts are established, grief should not be turned into speculation; the rule of law requires truth to come through proper investigation, ValidViewNetwork reports.
