Presidency Challenges Obi: Quit 2027 Race Over Anambra Debt Row

A political challenge over Anambra’s finances has now moved directly into the 2027 presidential contest, with the Presidency asking Peter Obi to put his political future behind his own earlier pledge.

The Presidency has challenged Peter Obi to quit the 2027 presidential race if allegations that his administration left debts for Anambra State are established.

The challenge followed renewed claims by the Anambra State Government about liabilities allegedly linked to previous administrations.

Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga referred to Obi’s earlier position that he would stop campaigning if anyone could prove that he left debts behind.

Onanuga recalled Obi’s position, saying, “Peter Obi claimed he left Anambra with a clean slate of debt and even threatened to quit the presidential race if his claims were proven otherwise.

Obi, however, has rejected the debt allegations and maintained that he left Anambra without the liabilities being attributed to his administration.In a fresh response, Obi said he would stop campaigning if anyone proved that he left the debts being alleged against him.

The dispute has consequently shifted from a question about Anambra’s financial records into a wider political argument involving the credibility of one of the major contenders in the 2027 presidential race.
