Mutinous Soldiers Strike Niamey in Fresh Bid to Oust Niger Junta

​NIAMEY — Heavy gunfire and powerful explosions shook Niger’s capital, Niamey, early Saturday as mutinous soldiers within the armed forces launched a coordinated assault targeting the Diori Hamani International Airport, the military airbase Base 101, and the perimeter of the Presidential Palace.

​The pre-dawn violence plunged the city into panic, temporarily cutting off national television and radio broadcasts and posing the most severe internal challenge yet to the military government led by General Abdourahamane Tiani.

​According to security sources and regional analysts, the insurrection involved disgruntled frontline soldiers and units deploying from southwestern localities such as Ouallam, Tera, and Dosso. Troops stationed in these volatile border areas have borne the brunt of relentless insurgent attacks and have grown increasingly frustrated with the military leadership’s failure to stem the security crisis.
