​Police in Mpumalanga have launched a six-count murder investigation after the bodies of six suspected illegal miners were discovered in a mountainous area of Mashobote, Ngodwana.

​Law enforcement officers and the province’s Illicit Mining Team were dispatched to the scene following a tip-off from a community member who spotted the bodies. All six victims, whose identities and nationalities remain unconfirmed, bore fatal gunshot wounds.

​Mpumalanga Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise expressed grave concern over the brutal discovery. Preliminary findings suggest the massacre may stem from violent territorial disputes and turf wars between rival illicit mining syndicates operating within the region.
