LAGOS — In a dramatic courtroom testimony that laid bare a chilling tale of cyber-snooping, deception, and escalating fury, Benjamin Nnayerugo—popularly known as socialite Killaboi—has detailed how a simulated online trap blew open his relationship with his late girlfriend, Augusta Onuwaghagbe.
Standing trial for murder before Justice Ibironke Harrison of the Lagos State High Court at the Igbosere division, Nnayerugo offered a blow-by-blow account of the events leading up to the tragedy. According to the defendant, the fatal unraveling began with a string of suspicious Instagram messages, leading him to catfish his own girlfriend under the guise of a wealthy client.
A Bad Bet and a Prying Eye
The testimony traced the flashpoint back to late June 2023. Already reeling from a bruising sports betting loss that left him in a foul mood, Nnayerugo claimed his girlfriend, Augusta, attempted to lift his spirits by reminding him of past victories.
The comfort did little to soothe him. Shortly after Augusta left to return to school, Nnayerugo admitted he continued remotely monitoring her Instagram account—to which he already had full access. For a week, he saw nothing more alarming than routine well-wishes and club invitations.
That complacency shattered a day before Augusta was scheduled to visit Lagos. Nnayerugo stumbled upon a conversation with an Instagram account using the alias “Yako,” urging her to move their chat off Snapchat. When the sender inquired about her availability for a Lagos trip, Augusta allegedly signaled readiness, quickly steering the discussion toward financial terms.
The Catfishing Trap: Posing as ‘Yako’
Driven by mounting suspicion, Nnayerugo didn’t just read—he retaliated digitally.
Extracting a phone number from the chat, he procured a virtual SIM card and spun up a replica WhatsApp account using Yako’s profile identity. Posing as the mystery benefactor, he re-engaged Augusta to test her loyalty.
- ”She asked for ₦1.5 million,” Nnayerugo testified before a stunned courtroom.
- He countered with ₦800,000, which she flatly rejected due to the perceived personal risks involved.
- After haggling through hotel and apartment logistics—and even discussing medical clearances for unprotected intimacy—Nnayerugo ultimately caved and agreed to her steep ₦1.5 million demand.
Breakdown and Family Fallout
The confirmation of the transaction plunged the defendant into an intense emotional spiral. Describing himself as physically shaking and on the verge of a psychological collapse, Nnayerugo abandoned a half-formed plan to ambush them at a hotel. Instead, he chose a digital confrontation.
He initiated a video call. Upon seeing his face on the screen, Augusta allegedly shrieked and dropped her phone. Nnayerugo declared the relationship dead and threatened to expose her to her mother.
In a twist that further inflamed tensions, Nnayerugo contacted Augusta’s mother—with whom he had previously shared a warm, church-going bond—to complain about her daughter’s alleged misconduct. However, the call backfired. Rather than offering sympathy, the mother berated him, calling his unauthorized intrusion into Augusta’s private Instagram account a criminal offense. Furious that she focused on his surveillance rather than the betrayal, Nnayerugo abruptly hung up.
Courtroom Sensitivity and Next Steps
As the trial progressed to the exhibition of video evidence, defense counsel Marcel Oru requested that Augusta’s grieving mother and brother be excused from the courtroom to spare them further psychological trauma. Prosecuting counsel Adebayo Araba raised no objections to the humane proposal.
Justice Harrison noted that the request would be granted pending a formal agreement between both legal teams, subsequently adjourning the high-stakes murder trial for the continuation of proceedings.
While Nnayerugo’s detailed testimony provides the defense’s version of the emotional trigger behind the conflict, it remains merely one piece of a complex judicial puzzle. The Lagos State High Court must ultimately weigh all competing testimonies and forensic evidence before delivering its final verdict on the grim fate of late Augusta Onuwaghagbe.
