A Lagos-based legal practitioner has raised a fresh alarm over an alleged high-stakes extortion scandal involving police officers stationed along the busy Lagos airport route, who allegedly coerced a traveller into parting with ₦3.1 million under duress.
In a viral video detailing the incident, the lawyer called on the Inspector-General of Police and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police to launch an immediate, comprehensive investigation into rogue elements targeting commuters and air travellers plying the gateway corridor.
According to the legal counsel, the harrowing ordeal began when his client was flagged down along the airport road by officers who aggressively demanded to inspect his flight ticket before forcing a search of his mobile phone.
Rather than executing a standard roadside verification, the operatives allegedly diverted the traveller to a covert police facility located on Alhaji Aziz Street in the Shogunle area of Ikeja. Inside the facility, the victim was reportedly subjected to intimidation, psychological pressure, and forced to write self-incriminating statements before the heavy ransom was wrung out of him.
Exploiting Third-Party Channels
Unravelling the modus operandi of the security operatives, the lawyer disclosed that the officers deliberately bypassed their personal accounts to evade direct financial trails. Instead, they allegedly utilized Point of Sale (POS) operators and third-party bank accounts to process and receive the illicit funds.
Expressing deep concern over the growing nexus between corrupt security personnel and digital payment vendors, the legal team warned that POS agents found culpable of aiding and abetting extortion would be joined in prospective legal actions and subjected to full-scale investigations.
Advisory to Travellers
In the wake of the incident, the lawyer has urged members of the public travelling through the nation’s airports to exercise heightened vigilance. He specifically advised citizens never to succumb to intimidation or author statements while in police custody unless accompanied or advised by legal counsel.
A formal petition is reportedly being processed for submission to police authorities, as mounting pressure weighs on the command to cleanse the airport corridor of rising predatory policing.
