The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has attributed the absence of an approved vaccine for the lethal Bundibugyo strain of Ebola to a glaring lack of international interest, warning that a faster, more robust global response would have materialized had the health crisis unfolded in Western nations.

Speaking during a media briefing, Africa CDC Director-General Dr. Jean Kaseya criticized international partners for sidelining the epidemic. “I can tell you, if this outbreak was in Western countries, a vaccine would already be available,” Kaseya stated. “Why this vaccine today is not available? Because some of our partners decided to consider this issue as an African issue; they were not interested.”

Expanding Continental Research and Clinical Trials

Despite the shortage of licensed vaccines and approved medical treatments specifically tailored for the Bundibugyo strain, Africa CDC is spearheading proactive local interventions. Kaseya revealed that the agency is actively supporting clinical trials, pointing to an indigenous African manufacturer in Egypt currently evaluating a potential vaccine candidate.

Additionally, the agency is collaborating closely with health authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda to test compassionate use pathways for Ervebo—a vaccine originally engineered to combat the Zaire strain of Ebola.

Emphasizing the continent’s intellectual and scientific self-sufficiency, Kaseya stressed that Africa possesses the technical expertise and human capital required to spearhead its own medical countermeasures. “We don’t want to see Africa left behind. We have the knowledge, we have people with intelligence, we have the capacity to manufacture vaccines, and we need to move on,” he asserted.

Escalating Regional and Continental Threat

The ongoing outbreak, initially declared in the DRC in May 2026, has rapidly evolved into a major public health emergency. According to regional health authorities, the epidemic has triggered more than 9,000 confirmed cases and 4,381 deaths.

Cross-border transmission has further intensified regional anxiety. Kenya recently logged its ninth case, while Nigeria confirmed its first imported case of the Bundibugyo strain in the Federal Capital Territory, prompting swift containment protocols, contact tracing for 44 exposed individuals, and high-risk quarantine measures.

To combat the widening crisis, Africa CDC has ramped up resource mobilization, confirming that 28 African member states have contributed domestic funding to support the emergency response. Kaseya has urged enhanced continental solidarity, improved cross-border coordination, and sustainable domestic investments to insulate Africa from over-reliance on external aid during future public health emergencies.
