Terror in Odeda: Bandits Threaten School Abductions

ABEOKUTA, NIGERIA — Panic has gripped rural communities in the Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State following intelligence reports that suspected bandits have issued written threats targeting local schools for mass abductions.

​Local hunters and vigilante groups have raised a fresh security alarm, revealing that the terrorists circulated the warnings across various social media platforms, explicitly naming specific towns and villages marked for imminent attacks.

​The disturbing development comes barely a fortnight after a filling station manager was seized by armed men in the council area. The victim was only released after a hefty ransom was paid to his captors.

​Speaking on Ojukoro, a current affairs programme monitored on Smash 88.1 FM in Abeokuta, the Chairman of the Odeda Hunters’ Association, Festus Ogundairo, confirmed that the security situation in the area has degenerated into an acute crisis.

​“It is true that these incidents are not happening only in Odeda, but the situation here is particularly worrisome,” Ogundairo stated, speaking in Yoruba. “What is becoming more disturbing is what we are seeing on social media platforms—reports that bandits have sent letters threatening to come and kidnap schoolchildren.”

​According to Ogundairo, the recent abduction of the petroleum retail manager occurred around 7:00 PM near a major secondary school in Odeda, highlighting the vulnerability of educational facilities in the vicinity.

​While local security personnel and vigilante networks have already commenced preventive deployments to foil any incursions, the hunters’ boss confessed that they are severely outgunned. He made an impassioned appeal to Governor Dapo Abiodun and state security agencies to immediately equip local hunters with approved firearms, ammunition, and operational vehicles.

​“We need bullets and good guns to battle these terrorists,” Ogundairo pleaded. “Even though the law restricts us from carrying sophisticated weapons, the government should at least provide us with the ones we are permitted to use. We are ready to confront these criminals with them.”

​The association also requested a fleet of operational motorcycles to enable its members to patrol the rugged forest terrains and remote borders where conventional security agencies find difficult to navigate.

​Emphasizing that local hunters possess an unmatched understanding of the geography of the council area, Ogundairo maintained that seamless collaboration between community-based vigilantes and formal security forces remains the state’s best defense against rural banditry.
