LAGOS – In a decisive bid to sanitize the state’s education sector and guarantee learner safety, the Lagos State Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA) has executed an aggressive enforcement and regulatory overhaul across private schools in the state.

The agency’s sweeping regulatory actions have resulted in the temporary closure of recalcitrant institutions, the investigation of dozens of critical safety breaches, and the formal submission of a tailored framework to domesticate the National Policy on Non-State Schools into a Lagos State-specific policy.

Enforcing Safety and Accountability

The OEQA reported that it received and addressed a total of 84 high-risk cases involving critical infractions. These incidents were spread across severe categories, including sexual abuse and assault, illegal school operations, and tragic occurrences of learner death.

Demonstrating a swift response mechanism to structural and ethical failures, the agency thoroughly investigated and closed approximately 85% of these reported cases. While strict enforcement led to closures, five private schools were subsequently permitted to reopen after comprehensively satisfying the prescribed compliance and safety conditions.

This regulatory crackdown follows a coordinated intervention mobilized by the OEQA, which brought together relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) along with key educational partners. The inter-agency coalition delivered targeted solutions aimed directly at improving deteriorating school infrastructure, securing learner welfare, standardizing curriculum delivery, and enforcing absolute regulatory compliance.

Scaling Approvals and Examination Integrity

To cater to the expanding footprint of the non-state education sector while maintaining standards, the OEQA officially issued Provisional Approval Letters to 231 private schools that met the state’s established operational criteria.

Simultaneously, the agency stepped up its campaign against academic malpractice by scaling up its Subject Recognition Inspections (SRI) for Examination Integrity. A total of 145 private secondary schools—spanning both Junior and Senior cadres—were subjected to these specialized inspections to ensure that local and national evaluation benchmarks are strictly protected.

Rewarding Academic Excellence

Beyond its rigorous regulatory and enforcement oversight, Lagos State continues to champion academic dedication and intellectual competition. The state government hosted a high-level dinner to honor the exceptional young minds who emerged as winners of the 21st Edition of the prestigious Lagos State Spelling Bee Competition.

The elite reception celebrated the literacy milestones achieved by the students, reinforcing the government’s dual approach of balancing uncompromising structural regulation with the active encouragement of academic excellence.

With the localized National Policy on Non-State Schools framework now awaiting final executive consideration and approval, the OEQA is positioned to legally anchor its heightened oversight, setting a strict standard for private education administration in Nigeria.
