ACCRA, GHANA — An Accra District Court has sentenced a 41-year-old Nigerian woman to six months in prison with hard labor following her failed attempt to illegally acquire a Ghanaian passport using falsified identity documents.
The convict, Franca Wilson, who works as a welder, pleaded guilty to three counts of identity fraud and documentation forgery before the Adabraka District Court on Tuesday, May 12, 2026. The presiding judge handed down the six-month custodial sentence on Wednesday, May 20, ordering the terms to run concurrently.
The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) confirmed the conviction and sentencing in a statement broadcast by the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation.
According to official enforcement reports, Wilson’s run-in with the law began on April 24, 2026, when she visited the Accra Passport Application Centre to finalize her passport acquisition. However, vigilant immigration officers screening applicants detected glaring inconsistencies in her underlying nationality claims.
“She was subsequently arrested and referred to the National Enforcement Department at the GIS Headquarters for further investigations,” a GIS spokesperson confirmed to local media.
Detailed background checks by intelligence investigators quickly unraveled her claims. The investigation established that Wilson is a Nigerian citizen born in Rivers State to Nigerian parents. However, in her bid to secure Ghanaian citizenship status, she submitted a counterfeit birth certificate claiming she was born in Somanya, a town in Ghana’s Eastern Region, to a Ghanaian mother.
Officials noted that during interrogation, Wilson completely failed to provide any credible, verifiable information regarding her alleged Ghanaian lineage or the identity of her supposed Ghanaian parent.
This case marks the latest in a series of collaborative crackdowns by Ghanaian immigration authorities targeting identity theft and document fraud by foreign nationals. Security analysts note that the swift conviction underscores a tightening security grid at Ghana’s passport and national identity infrastructure, designed to protect the integrity of state documentation.
Wilson has since been transferred to a correctional facility to begin serving her term.
