The Federal Government has allocated N2.1 billion to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex in Ile-Ife, Osun State, to revive its renal replacement programme.
The allocation was disclosed by the hospital’s Chief Medical Director, Professor John Okeniyi, on Thursday during the grand finale of the institution’s 50th anniversary celebration, ValidViewNetwork reports .
THE ANNOUNCEMENT
Okeniyi said the planned revival of the programme was part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for the health sector.
“I would also like to thank President Bola Tinubu because we have up to N2.1 billion appropriated for our renal programme. By the time we do this and get the money, I believe the renal replacement programme will be fully back. That is part of the Renewed Hope Agenda,” he said.
WHY IT MATTERS
Kidney disease is a silent killer in Nigeria. Thousands of patients require dialysis every week, but the cost is prohibitive, and access to care is limited.
For OAUTHC, the renal programme was once a lifeline for patients in the South-West. Its revival, with N2.1 billion in federal funding, could restore hope to hundreds of families who have been forced to travel long distances or pay exorbitant fees for treatment.
The allocation is a significant investment in a specialist service that saves lives. But the CMD’s caveat is important: the money must be released and properly utilised.
If it is, the programme will be back. If it is not, the patients will continue to wait. The golden jubilee celebration is a milestone. The N2.1 billion allocation is a promise. And for kidney patients in Ile-Ife and beyond, the promise cannot be fulfilled soon enough. ValidViewNetwork reports.
