The Nigerian Air Force has recovered the Cockpit Voice Recorder from the scene of the ATR-42 aircraft accident in Igbokoda, Ondo State, with technical teams confirming that the device is intact.
The development was announced on Friday by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, ValidViewNetwork reports.
THE RECOVERY
According to Ejodame, the CVR was confirmed intact by technical teams from the NAF and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau.
“Part of the Flight Data Recorder, commonly referred to as the black box, was also retrieved, while efforts to locate and recover its remaining portion continue,” he said.
Additional aircraft wreckage, engine components and human remains have also been recovered.
“Operations are ongoing in the challenging swamp terrain, with teams working to retrieve outstanding components and facilitate the necessary technical examinations,” Ejodame added .
THE INVESTIGATION
Ejodame said the investigation is being conducted with due diligence to ensure comprehensive, evidence-based findings .
“The recovery process also involves careful attention to the proper handling of human remains, with the Directorate of Identification and Classification undertaking the necessary procedures for proper identification,” he said .
He noted that the NAF has sustained engagements with the families of the victims, recognising their need for information and support .
“Engagement with relevant authorities on environmental concerns raised by the host community also remains an important part of the broader response,” he added .
THE CONTEXT
The NAF ATR-42 aircraft, with registration number NAF 931, crashed on October 5, 2026, while on a routine mission from Benin City to Lagos.
All 25 people on board—five crew members and 20 passengers, died in the crash .
The recovery operation has been complicated by the swampy terrain and the aircraft’s submersion in the water.
WHY IT MATTERS
The recovery of the Cockpit Voice Recorder is a critical step in the investigation into the crash. The CVR records the conversations of the pilots, as well as other sounds in the cockpit, and can provide vital clues about what happened in the final moments before the aircraft went down.
The Flight Data Recorder, parts of which have also been recovered, records technical parameters such as altitude, speed, and engine performance.
Together, these devices are the key to understanding why NAF 931 crashed, and what can be done to prevent a similar tragedy in the future.
