HONG KONG — Prominent democracy activist Joshua Wong has been sentenced to an additional 10 years in prison under Beijing’s sweeping national security law, significantly prolonging a captivity that was initially expected to end early next year.
The 30-year-old activist, who previously pleaded guilty to a charge of conspiring to collude with foreign forces, learned his fate following a ruling by High Court Judge William Tam. Wong is already serving a concurrent prison sentence stemming from the city’s largest mass prosecution under the national security legislation, linked to an unofficial legislative primary.
The Ruling and Judicial Rationale
Handing down the verdict, Judge Tam characterized Wong’s actions as grave, labeling him a primary mastermind in an organized scheme to lobby foreign governments. The prosecution focused heavily on coordinated efforts involving Wong and fellow activist Nathan Law to secure international intervention, including pushing for foreign sanctions and the revocation of Hong Kong’s preferential trade status.
”The punishment must fit the gravity of the crime committed,” Judge Tam wrote in his judgment, emphasizing the necessity of general deterrence and expressing the community’s condemnation of actions inviting external pressure on China and Hong Kong.
While the court established a starting baseline of 13 years, the final sentence was reduced to a decade to account for Wong’s guilty plea and formal mitigation arguments. Wong will serve the remainder of his ongoing security-related sentence alongside the new term.
Reflection from Behind Bars
In a statement released through legal channels and obtained by The Associated Press, Wong reflected on his years of incarceration, noting that his political journey was never driven by animosity toward the mainland or local authorities. He maintained that he never advocated for Hong Kong’s independence, admitting that while he initially believed his actions fell within legal boundaries, his perspective evolved over time.
Detailing his routine inside prison over the past six years, Wong shared that he has focused on personal rehabilitation, pursuing university studies, reading extensively, and striving to emerge with greater resilience and responsibility.
The decision has triggered sharp international attention, with global human rights organizations and legal observers closely monitoring the ongoing implementation of the national security legal framework in the territory.
