Corruption Scandal Rocks Ruling AK Party
Turkish authorities have taken former Family and Social Affairs Minister Fatma Betul Sayan Kaya into custody, marking a dramatic escalation in a multi-billion-dollar market manipulation and insider trading scandal that has sent shockwaves through the upper echelons of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party.
Kaya, who served in the presidential cabinet from 2016 to 2018 and recently stepped down as deputy chair of the ruling party, was detained late Thursday. She now faces formal charges of violating Türkiye’s Capital Markets Law and participating in a criminal organization, with an Istanbul court ordering her held pending trial, according to the state-run Anadolu Agency.
Anatomy of an Alleged Multi-Billion-Lira Payout
The financial scandal centers on suspicious trading activity and the sudden regulatory liquidation of several high-profile investment funds.
- The Transactions: Opposition parties brought the affair to light, alleging that Kaya and her husband executed perfectly timed stock sell-offs worth tens of millions of dollars just moments before financial regulators intervened to freeze and liquidate the manipulated funds.
- The Sums Involved: Main opposition figures claim the couple parlayed an initial investment of 163 million liras (approximately $3 million) into an astonishing return of 2.17 billion liras ($43 million).
- The Legal Status: Though both individuals have denied any deliberate wrongdoing, media reports indicate they have already transferred a substantial portion of the disputed profits into an escrow account designated by banking regulators. Following a grueling second round of police interrogations, Kaya’s husband was released under judicial control with mandatory periodic check-ins, while Kaya was remanded into custody.
Expanding Nationwide Crackdown
The high-profile arrest highlights the widening scope of an unprecedented financial crackdown overseen by the state. Justice Minister Akin Gurlek revealed this week that the judicial dragnet has expanded to include more than 430 suspects under active investigation for systematic insider trading and market distortion. To date, 112 individuals have been formally arrested as prosecutors move to restore institutional credibility and investor confidence in Türkiye’s capital markets.
