The legal troubles surrounding Zimbabwe’s high-profile political families deepened this week as Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, the youngest son of the late former President Robert Mugabe, found himself at the center of a dramatic criminal case.
Mugabe, 29, appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Court alongside four co-accused individuals following a violent confrontation with anti-corruption officials. The altercation erupted during a high-stakes operation targeting suspected luxury vehicle smuggling.
The Raid and the Seizure
The drama unfolded on Tuesday evening at the Brompton Guest Lodge in Harare, where investigators from the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) tracked down two high-end vehicles: a Lamborghini Urus and a Mercedes-Benz. According to ZACC spokesperson Simiso Mlevu, the luxury automobiles are suspected of being brought into the country illegally in violation of customs and temporary importation regulations.
Records cited by anti-corruption authorities indicated that the Lamborghini entered Zimbabwe earlier in June with clearance logs indicating a July departure, while the Mercedes-Benz was logged for a trip to South Africa in October—raising red flags about undeclared extensions and duty evasion.
As ZACC operatives moved to impound the vehicles, chaos ensued. Investigators reported that a team member was physically assaulted during the seizure, prompting an immediate escalation involving local law enforcement.
Arrests and Legal Proceedings
Following the incident, police detained Mugabe alongside Munashe Mubawu, Terrence Johannes Chinyemba, Fredson Peter, and Solomon Pamire. The group faced preliminary questioning before being transferred to court to answer charges including assault and obstructing anti-corruption investigations.
The latest development adds to a growing list of controversies trailing the former first family since the elder Mugabe’s death in 2019, following his decades-long rule that ended in 2017. Legal experts note that the case highlights intensifying state scrutiny over irregular vehicle imports and customs fraud, particularly as authorities crack down on loopholes involving temporary permits.
The accused individuals have been formally remanded as ongoing forensic and customs investigations into the provenance of the seized luxury fleet continue.
